Sri Lanka T20I skipper Dasun Shanaka told media on Thursday, 10 October that the “second-string” side that the country sent to Pakistan for the limited-over series there, amid an unprecedented security situation, made a remarkable change of fate in the country’s cricket.
Newcomers like Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Wanindu Hasaranga, Shehan Jayasuriya, and Oshada Fernando, including ad hoc skipper Shanaka himself, played well in Pakistan only to put the seniors who skipped the trip in immense pressure to re-enter the side – that too with barely a year to go for the next ICC T20 World Cup.
Shanaka stressed that at the Gaddafi Sri Lanka cricket began its upward journey indicating they are ready to launch from there. Meanwhile, Chief Selector Ashanth de Mel said some of the nearly 10 seniors who opted out of the series citing security reasons have to fight out for their places now because their criteria is to give form priority over experience.
