The gorgeous island girl Sharon De Silva

18 Jul 2022

By Nethmie Dehigama I first came across Sharon De Silva’s – @islandgirlshaz – content on TikTok. Her energy was uplifting and refreshing, and of course she is absolutely gorgeous. When I saw her, the first descriptor that came to my mind was ‘sunshine’. This lovely 25-year-old is a Sri Lankan living in Australia, and her social media content focuses on empowerment, fashion, lifestyle, and relationships. I was very excited to reach out to her while she was visiting Sri Lanka with her husband. Let’s get to know more about Sharon this week.  Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. A: I am a Christian fashion and lifestyle influencer encouraging women to find self-worth and empowerment. Growing up in Australia I never really saw any South Asian representation in the media. I also never had someone like an older sister to give me advice on relationships or navigating the world, so I only hope through my social media I can be that ‘akki’ to so many other girls.  Q: Has being a social media blogger been a part of your plan from the beginning? A: Growing up I always loved YouTube and fashion, but of course being a South Asian growing up in western society, my parents wanted me to go to university and get a degree. I never loved what I was studying and always felt like I wanted to do something creative, so I just found myself posting on Instagram and posting the occasional YouTube video.  Q: How has that journey been so far? A: When I was younger, I always found myself going to second-hand shops and just experimenting with DIYs, turning sweaters into crop sweaters, and posting tutorials on YouTube. As I grew older, Instagram came about and I was able to share my outfit ideas. The moment my social media really took off was through TikTok. I was getting my hair coloured for the first time in 23 years and I decided to post a transformation video which, to my surprise, performed so well. Q: Who are your muses when it comes to fashion and lifestyle? A: I wouldn’t really say I have any particular muses when it comes to fashion. I think my fashion sense is so diverse because I like so many different things, but I do find myself always drawn to a more vintage touch when it comes to putting an outfit together. As for lifestyle, my beautiful mum and mother-in-law are my biggest muses and of course there’s Harriet Tubman who is just an incredible woman. Q: What does a typical day look like for you in Sydney? A: I wouldn’t really say I have a typical day because my life as an influencer and wife to a footballer changes day to day, whether it be me attending an event or spending the day creating content. I think the only consistency we have is having a game day on weekends. Q: People love your relationship content as well. How did you meet your husband? A: The only way I could describe meeting my husband is ‘in God’s perfect timing’. We met at an 18th birthday party, but only spoke for a few seconds. I remember walking in and thinking that he was really cute but I never really thought much of it. At the time, I wasn’t in a place to date after horrible relationships, and he was also leaving for Europe for football. Fast forward a year, I remember crying one night feeling lost, and wrote a letter to God telling Him exactly what I wanted in a man. The following year, he came back into my life at the most perfect time.  Q: What is the best relationship advice you’d give to everyone reading? A: To always be true to who you are and to never settle for less than what you deserve. The person you marry is who you want to share the rest of your life with and that’s a huge commitment. Be with someone that is your best friend, that shows you how much they love you, and never makes you doubt that. Be with someone with whom you can resolve issues in a healthy way rather than screaming and shouting.  Q: How has visiting Sri Lanka on holiday been these past few days? A: Visiting Sri Lanka has been a mixture of feelings. It was the first time my husband was able to visit my parents’ homeland so that was super exciting, especially having my parents join us. But my heart really ached for the people of Sri Lanka – seeing first-hand the way everyone was struggling for basic necessities and especially the insanely long lines for gas. Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? A: As a wife to a footballer, it’s hard to say where I see myself in 10 years; our life is just so unpredictable. But in 10 years, I’d like to see myself in Europe with two little babies. Q: What is happiness to you? A: Happiness to me is not something you strive to have one day. Happiness is happening right now, it’s the moments of joy in your everyday life. There will always be trials and tribulations in your life but it’s being able to see and appreciate those moments that make you smile and that’s what makes all the difference.
