SUNDAY (13/10/19)
  • SL tennis team left for China for the ¥ 1 million (nearly $ 142,000) prize money event at the Kunming Int’l Tennis Championship in Anning City
  •  At the Chicago Marathon 2019, Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei, 25, eclipsed the women’s marathon world record (2:14:04) set in 2003 by Britain’s Paula Radcliffe (2:15:25)
  •  Barbados Tridents, led by Jason Holder, beat Guyana Amazon Warriors, under Shoaib Malik, by 27 runs at Tarouba (on Saturday [12]) to win the 7th Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title for a second time
  •  India bowled out SA for 189 to win their second Test by an innings and 137 runs at Pune, to get an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series
  • US player Coco Gauff, 15, became the youngest to win a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) title in 15 years, winning the 2019 Linz Open beating Jelena Ostapenko in the final. Nicole Vadisova had won her maiden WTA title in Tashkent in 2004 when she too was 15
MONDAY (14/10/19)
  •  Mahamaya, Kandy and St. Peter’s, Colombo won Girls’ and Boys’ championships at the National School Games swimming events held at Sugathadasa
  • India Women beat SA Women by six runs in their third ODI at Vadodara and thus won the series 3-0
WEDNESDAY (16/10/19)
  •  Richmond, Ananda, Visakha, and Sanghamitta emerged champions in the All Island Schools Badminton Championship in Kandy
  • S. Thomas’, Mt. Lavinia won the Boys’ title at the All Island Schools Hardball Cricket tournament in Kandy and Katugastota. Trinity were runners-up
  • HFC, Kurunegala won U-16 and 20 titles at the All Island Schools Netball Champions held at St. Anne’s, Kurunegala. Ladies’ became U-18 champs
  • Devapathiraja, Rathgama won the Girls’ title for the third successive year at the All-island Schools Softball Cricket Championship held at Giriulla and Bopitiya. Pothuvil Central won the Boys’ title
  • In the All Island Inter-Schools Tennis Tournament held in Kandy, Visakha and Royal won in U-17 while Visakha won in U-20 Girls’. Royal and St. Peter’s were joint champs in U-20 Boys’. Senuri Alexander and Kavisha Ratnayake were adjudged the best players in Girls’ and Boys’, respectively
  • Super welterweight boxer Patrick Day died at the age of 27, four days after suffering a brain injury in a 10th-round stoppage defeat by Charles Conwell in Chicago
THURSDAY (17/09/19)
  • SL squad for Australia T20I series was announced. Lasith Malinga, Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Perera, and Kusal Mendis were included while Sadeera Samarawickrama, Minod Bhanuka, Lahiru Madushanka, and Angelo Perera were omitted from the squad that recently beat Pakistan
  • “We need to get 15 SL athletes qualified for the 2028 Olympics. The programme aiming that will get underway next month,” Sports Development Department Director General Dhammika Muthugala told media
  • SL U-16 Netball team left to Nepal for the South Asian Championship to be held from 18-22 in Kathmandu
  • SL U-19, playing in Mercantile League Cricket this time, notably defeated DIMO by six wickets at MCA grounds, Colombo
  • Sameera Deen of HFC, Bambalapitiya, and Druvinka Perera of Royal, Colombo clinched the U-19 Girls’ and Boys’ titles, respectively, at the 30th Junior National Squash Championship held from 12-16 October at the Air Force Squash Courts, Ratmalana
FRIDAY (18/09/19)
  • SLC announced two SL U-19 squads, under Nipun Dananjaya, for a series of two four-day and five youth ODI matches in Bangladesh from 26 October to 19 November
  • SLC announced the schedule for Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup to be held from 22-27 October in Colombo
  • SL’s Hasali Gajaba and Jaithra De Saram won the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) U-14 second week Girls’ and Boys’ championships at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association, Colombo
