  • Claims decision following meeting with DGHS
  • 3rd shot, 5 months after 2nd dose: Reports
  • Advisory Comm. and Ministry still evaluating
  • Matter under review: Dr. Hemantha Herath
BY Yumiko Perera According to the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), a decision has been taken to administer third doses of Covid-19 vaccines as boosters to healthcare workers, following a discussion held in this regard with the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday (19), The Sunday Morning learnt.  In light of the sudden surge in daily Covid-19 infections and related deaths, the decision comes after a request by the GMOA to consider administering an additional Covid-19 vaccine shot to healthcare workers, as frontliners are more exposed to contracting the virus.  While reports suggest that it has been decided to administer booster shots to healthcare workers, five months after the administration of the second jab, according to the Health Ministry, the provision of a third dose of a Covid-19 vaccine is currently being evaluated by the experts, and a final decision in this regard is to be taken by the Advisory Committee on Communicable Diseases (ACCD) over the next few days.  Speaking with The Sunday Morning, Health Ministry Communications Director, Public Health Services Deputy Director General, and Disaster Preparedness and Response Division Head Dr. Hemantha Herath noted that the possibility of a booster shot is continuously being reviewed.  "What we must understand is that the vaccines, as well as the disease, is quite new. Therefore, we cannot make haphazard decisions regarding the matter. Hence, the experts will analyse the data, and give recommendations accordingly, and based on those recommendations, the Ministry will take the decisions," Dr. Herath elaborated.  Several attempts by The Sunday Morning to contact Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana for further insight, proved futile.
