This was a pleasant surprise: Asha de Vos, Sea Hero of 2020

03 Dec 2020

Asha de Vos has brought pride to her country and to her calling as a marine biologist. Her commendable work as an ocean educator and pioneer of blue whale research within the northern Indian Ocean has led her to be named “Sea Hero of 2020” by Scuba Diving magazine and Seiko Watch of America. She was also graced with an award of $ 5,000 from Seiko that she will use to run a three-day residential field course in marine conservation for students who might otherwise never have the opportunity to experience the marine environment in person.  [caption id="attachment_107535" align="alignleft" width="225"] Photo Suada Azmy[/caption] Speaking to The Morning Brunch, Asha de Vos shared her thoughts on this achievement: “It’s a huge honour! In a year that has been unexpected, this was a pleasant surprise. It’s a good reminder that there still are things to be grateful for. I’m very floored and proud of being picked from all the sea heroes out there. This award was given to me not just for my work, but for changing the way my conservation works and bringing in diversity while being more inclusive. It’s a massive honour because I’m incredibly passionate about my work. I’m glad I got to participate in the betterment of the world.”   De Vos added that she will establish a one-year mentorship programme through which she will work with two Sri Lankan marine biology or marine education students for a year, meeting with them monthly to track progress and work through issues they face to honour her life’s calling.
