Thisakya: Writing to let the imagination run wild

26 Dec 2021

By Kusumanjalee Thilakarathna Thisakya Wickramasinghe is a 13-year-old student from St. Bridget’s Convent who is passionate about writing, music, and ballet. Her writing was appreciated with a bronze medal at the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2021. She has completed Bhatkhande exams in vocal and violin. In an interview with Little Stars, Thisakya said that reading is key in becoming a good writer, as reading gives ideas to write and also helps to improve one’s vocabulary.    Thisakya, can you introduce yourself to the Little Stars audience?    My name is Thisakya Jehani Praguwa Wickramasinghe. I am 13 years old and I study at St. Bridget’s Convent in year eight. I am the only child in my family. During my free time, I like to engage in activities like gardening, baking, reading books, and solving puzzles. I am personally very fascinated by flowers, and it makes my day just looking at the gardenias I have planted in my backyard. I have participated in the Indian vocal and violin Bhatkhande exams and passed them with flying colours. I also participated in the World Choir Games under the Voice Print Academy and we won first place. I also did ballet, but stopped after the pandemic. I have won gold medals and trophies by participating in The Voice Over Festival of Performing Arts conducted by the British Arts Festivals Association. I won first place in the essay competition conducted by Eco Minds 2021 in the grade 6-8 category.   It looks like you enjoy writing. Can you tell us why you enjoy it so much?  I enjoy writing because I can let my imagination run wild. In what people might think is an ordinary old book, I could soar through the sky on a unicorn, climb Mount Everest, or even meet talking rabbits and dancing penguins. Every word in a book is a puzzle you piece together in your mind’s eye to get the final product.   How did you feel when you were awarded a bronze medal for the essay you wrote for the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition? I was extremely happy because I never imagined that I would win the award.   Can you tell us what happened at the essay competition conducted by the UK’s Immerse University?   I had to write my ideas on the law category topic: “Is stealing a loaf of bread for a starving family a crime?”. I entered under the 13-15 year olds category. After a few weeks, I received an email saying that I won an 80% scholarship for any course at the Immerse University for 2022 in England.   Can you give our readers some tips on becoming a good writer?    To become a good writer the first thing you have to do is read a lot of books. When you read books, you could get loads of ideas that you could develop to write a story, and reading also improves your vocabulary. Additionally, if you do get an idea, you shouldn’t underestimate yourself thinking that your idea isn’t good enough. However, you should always keep your ideas simple and to the point. Last but not least, a pen is a writer’s best friend, so let your imagination run wild.   What are the languages that you currently study?  I am currently studying Chinese and French. In the future, I hope to study Russian as well, as I am very fascinated by Russian culture.   Can you describe your experience in learning different languages?  I enjoy learning different languages as it helps me to communicate with people in other countries. It was hard at first to learn another language, but I never gave up. Instead, I improved myself by reading different books in French and Chinese.   How does learning different languages help you?  I learn languages as a hobby, but in the future, I plan to migrate to France for my education. That’s why I’m learning French. I learn Chinese because I Iike the language.   Can you tell us about the sports you play?   I am not the biggest fan of sports, but before the pandemic, I used to do archery at school and rifle shooting privately.   Have you participated in any archery or wushu competitions?  I haven’t participated in any tournaments as of now, but I plan to in the future.   What is your ambition?  This is a very hard question as I have a lot of things in mind. I am currently studying anatomy because I want to be a doctor. However, there are a lot of unlawful activities going on in this world we live in, and I want to stand up to bad people and defend the innocent with my words. Therefore, I would like to be a lawyer. I have a pretty hard time choosing between the two, but my final decision is to be a lawyer.   Is there anyone you would like to thank for supporting you?     Yes, I would like to thank my mother for being there with me and supporting my decisions and helping me every step of the way in my journey. I could never have won an award like this if it weren’t for my mother, as she is a great English teacher. She was the one who taught me proper English since I was three years old. She helped me improve in my studies and be the person I am today, so I am very thankful to have her in my life. I would also like to thank all my teachers and my Principal Rev. Sister Jeewani Martinez for the support given.
