08 Jun 2020

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa The Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB) yesterday (7) confirmed the deaths of three young Sri Lankan migrant workers in South Korea last week. According to the bureau, the deaths are related to cases of murder, accident, and suicide. SLBFE Deputy General Manager Jagath Batugedara told The Morning that the bureau together with the Embassy in South Korea was taking necessary steps to file legal action against the murder convict. Furthermore, he said the Embassy together with the South Korean Police has launched an investigation into the other two deaths relating to suicide and the accident. “Except the Sri Lankan who had committed suicide, the other two were legally residing in South Korea,” he said. When asked whether the bodies of the three Sri Lankans would be brought back to the country, the SLBFE said a final decision has not yet been taken and the relatives of those have not yet made such a request from the bureau. All three individuals were employed in Korea under the Employment Permit System (EPS) in low-skilled jobs. “The murder convict is now in the custody of the (South Korean) Police and the convict had confessed that he was trying to escape from South Korea to China by the time the Police took him into the custody,” Batugedara said.
