The Meteorology Department forecasts a possibility for afternoon thundershowers over most parts of the island today (Sunday). Fairly heavy rainfall (about 75-100 mm) can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, Southern, North Central, and North Western Provinces and in the Mannar and Vauniya Districts. Light showers might occur in coastal areas of the Western and Southern Provinces and in the Puttalam and Jaffna Districts in the morning too. Misty conditions are to be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, and North Central Provinces during the morning. With the torrential rains that were experienced in the central part of the country last week, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) had altered the public to be vigilant of possible earth slips in the region. Earth slips were reported from several parts of the Kandy District which had affected 193 persons. Adverse weather conditions have affected a total of 284 persons and caused partial damage to 61 houses in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle, and Badulla Districts. With the increasing rainfall, the amount of persons affected by the dry spell has dropped to 640,086. A 64-year-old from Opanayake (Sabaragamuwa Province) was struck by lightning on Wednesday (9) evening and upon being admitted to the Kahawatte Hospital, had died. The deceased is identified as Athige Haril Gunaratne of Akarella. The Meteorology Department has requested the general public to take adequate precautions to minimise damage caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers over the next days. As part of their flood mitigation programme, the Sri Lanka Navy is routinely carrying out clean-ups to remove debris underneath bridges in the Southern Province and on Friday (11), the unit had cleared tree parts that had collected underneath the Wakwella Bridge in Galle which is over Gin Ganga.
