Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) filed a complaint with the Commissions to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) yesterday (07) calling for an investigation into the unexplained wealth of former Minister Nirupama Rajapaksa and her husband Thirukumar Nadesan in connection to the revelations made through the Pandora Papers. The letter states that funds over USD 44 million has been acquired by Nadesan and Rajapaksa which are in off-shore accounts or in the form of assets in Switzerland, Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates. The letter further mentions that the allegations against Nadesan and Rajapaksa raises serious concerns as the allegations contained therein could amount to offences under the law including the Bribery Act under section 23A as the amount of wealth that is being exposed appears to have been unaccounted for. The TISL has also requested for a probe into the Declaration of Assets and Liabilities of Rajapaksa and Nadesan during the period between 2005-2015 to continue further independent investigations. Furthermore, the letter confirms that the TISL is aware of the existing court case against Nadesan, and requests for the CIABOC to investigate into that matter as well. Additionally, the complaint notes that Nadesan falls under the definition of a Politically Exposed Person (PEP) as defined by the Financial Action Task Force due to his close connections with Nirupama Rajapaksa and is hence considered to be more vulnerable to bribery and commissions.
