TNA and TPA unite

12 May 2019

By Tharumalee Silva The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) have decided to work together on issues faced by the Tamils following the Easter Sunday attacks. Minister of National Integration, Official Languages, Social Progress, and Hindu Religious Affairs Mano Ganesan said that the emergency regulations have given authority to officials to unnecessarily use force against Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. Ganesan stated that the TPA and the TNA have joined hands in order to combat new challenges endured by the Tamil community and Sri Lanka as a whole, with regards to emergency regulations being imposed. The Minster stated that after the emergence of the Extremist terrorist group in Sri Lanka, the Tamil Community is facing new challenges due to the alleged discrimination that is being practiced by authoritative officers. “The authorities must understand that the northern Tamil community do not want a divided Sri Lanka. They want unity and protection,” Ganesan said. He further mentioned that the officers must understand that the Tamil community in Sri Lanka is not a threat anymore. He stated that he is highly disappointed as “the Tamil community was being discriminated and the focus from the extremist terrorist group was now being diverted to the Tamil community in Sri Lanka”. He continued to state that the country should focus on Islamist extremist terrorism rather than Tamil terrorism which is not being practiced at present. He further stated: “The majority of the people who lost their lives during the Easter Sunday attacks were Tamils. Especially in Batticaloa and Kochchikade.” Ganesan stated that the TPA and the TNA have noticed issues of their community being sidelined as a result of the attacks. “The tendency the community had to take up arms for a political agendas is over. The Tamils have given up arms, terrorism, and separatism. They want a peaceful and united Sri Lanka,” he said. “We share the sorrows of the Sri Lankans that lost their lives in Katana and the foreigners in five-star hotels, but Tamils have been the group that has been most victimised in this situation. We don’t see any party addressing this issue by interacting with the Tamil community,” he added.
