The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) did not participate in the 72nd National Independence Day celebrations held today (4) at the Independence Square for several reasons including the national anthem not been performed in Tamil, TNA Parliamentarian Mavai Senathirajah told The Sunday Morning.
Senathirajah said TNA Leader R. Sampanthan will provide a full statement in the next parliamentary session over TNA's decision to boycott the Independence Day celebrations.
The previous government issued a circular in 2016 declaring that there was no ban on singing the national anthem in the Tamil language. For the first time in 67 years, the anthem was performed in both Sinhala and Tamil at that year’s Independence Day event.
However this year, the new government led by Gotabaya Rajapasa decided not to have the national anthem sung in the Tamil language. (ZG)
