TNA calls for postponement of the General Elections

16 Mar 2020

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) today called for the postponement of the General elections due to the current situation in the country. In an official statement today, TNA Spokesperson M A Sumanthiran said, "The TNA is concerned about the threat posed to the people by the possible spread of the COVID-19 virus in the country. The safety of the public is our paramount concern. We call on the government to take all steps to prevent the spread of the virus. We will extent our fullest cooperation in this regard. For this reason, and for the reason that all democratic aspects cannot be properly adhered to in this abnormal situation, we request the postponement of the general elections due to be held on 25th of April 2020." President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday (15) during a discussion with leaders of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) revealed that the Parliamentary election in April will go ahead as scheduled.
