The Government has decided to extend the loan relief package given to the tourism industry for another nine months in order to protect the tourism industry in the face of the Covid-19 situation.
Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that the relevant circular was issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) on 13 September. The loan concession period for the tourism sector was due to end on 30 September. The circular has been issued by the CBSL to commercial banks.
Ranatunga added that Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa has taken the necessary steps on the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Those engaged in the tourism sector were provided with loan relief packages, relief for the payment of electricity and water bills, relief for the payment of leases as well as an allowance of Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 20,000 each for registered drivers and guides of the Tourism Development Authority.
The tourism sector has been hit the hardest by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Various parties in the tourism sector have requested the Government to extend the loan relief package for another six months. However, considering the current situation, the Government has taken steps to extend it for another nine months, noted Ranatunga.
