Trade unions to protest today

07 Apr 2022

  • Main protest at Lipton Roundabout at 3 p.m.
The Trade Union Co-ordinating Centre has decided to hold protests throughout the country today (8), initiating such as the national trade unions’ day of protest, without disturbing the lives of the people. “Accordingly, we call on all working people, trade unions, civil society organisations, and citizens who are striving to get the country on the right track to join the main protest near the Lipton Roundabout in Colombo from 3 p.m.,” said Ravi Kumudesh of the Trade Union Co-ordinating Centre. “The country is facing an irreversible crisis due to the failure of the Government and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to understand the views of the people and make decisions. The delay of one day in making decisions at this moment should be understood by a responsible Government as a delay that will turn the country backward for a year. Despite this, ministers like Highways Minister Johnston Fernando continue to threaten the people, proving that the Government does not want to respect the will of the people even at the last minute. The trade union movement has also decided to strengthen the people’s struggles by forcing the Government that does not have the confidence of the people of the country to gain international confidence and overcome this economic crisis,” he added.
