Train fares to increase?

15 Jun 2022

A request has been made to the government to revise train fares due to the hike in diesel prices, and this decision is pending at the moment, but an increase can be expected, says Sri Lanka Railways General Manager Dhammika Jayasundera. He made this statement during a media brief today (15). "Trains are a service provided to the citizens in the form of public transportation. We charge commuters an average of just 20-27 percent from the actual cost needed to run the trains. Due to this we are running at a loss, and we are not generating an income as we are operating the trains at a minimum charge. The Railways department has requested the government to approve a hike in train fares to ensure smooth delivery of services," said Jayasundera. He further mentioned that a proposal has been submitted to the Government to accommodate a 'Park and Ride' facility for commuters to self-drive their own vehicles to the train stations and to use the train services for longer hauls.
