Trvelkitty – taking any chance to hit the road

06 Aug 2021

Bhagya Madushani, better known as @trvelkitty on Instagram, is a travel enthusiast who recently faced some difficulty early this year when her travel page on Instagram was hacked and she was unable to recover it. Bhagya was left with no choice but to start from the beginning, having to let go of years of curated content, most of which were memories she valued dearly. While she has since been able to get back on track since late January, which was when her account was hacked, she stated that it was devastating to have to let go of years of content, especially considering that her travel page also doubled as a photobook of her own memories, a place for her to revisit to reminisce. Having started sharing travel content in 2016, Bhagya stated that what prompted her to begin her journey as a travel obsessive was due to a hard time she was experiencing back then. She was so incredibly close to making her dream of travelling the world as an airhostess come true, but “fate had other ideas and I didn’t quite make it”, she said. However, despite feeling down at the time, she resolved to travel anyway she can. “If I can’t travel the world, then I will travel where I can and so I decided to travel to as many corners of Sri Lanka as I could.” She said that she first started by taking baby steps, setting off on short trips with her family, and getting the lay of the land, following which she mustered up the courage to set off with her friends and eventually she even set off on the occasional solo trip. She said that most often she would travel on her own scooter with her own trvelkitty sticker on it. She shared that she has had some wonderful experiences while on the road, and one of the most notable experiences was when she visited Laxapana Falls, adding: “It’s not an easy path to the top, and usually, you have to be quite lucky to have the water level low enough that you can comfortably make it to the top, and I believe I was lucky that day, because it was all smooth going and I was able to stay there for a very long time.” Bhagya said that her passion is waterfall hunting, and that she absolutely revels in the trek that leads up to a hidden waterfall. “I love visiting waterfalls, and I think at this point I have been to about 50 different waterfalls all over the island,” she said, adding: “Most of my content tends to revolve around waterfalls because I love them so much.” She shared that in the six or seven months since her account was hacked, her following has been incredibly supportive in getting the word out about her new space. She said that she was very moved by the support and is so very grateful for all the shoutouts. Bhagya said that her audience is a lovely little community, and while she primarily uses her page as a personal blog where she simply shares photos of her experiences, as she isn’t so inclined towards vlogging and making video content, she has felt the support from her following and that they often interact with her, requesting more information about certain destinations. Bhagya stated that she hopes to someday develop her page to a point where she is one of the top female travel content creators in the island, and of course continue to embrace any and all opportunities to travel that come her way.
