Tsunami warning towers malfunction

A number of Tsunami warning towers had been inactive for several hours on Saturday, The Sunday Morning learns. The Disaster Management Centre also confirmed that a few towers had been founding to be malfunctioning during routine test carried out last morning. Director of the Disaster Management Centre, Pradeep Kodippili, said that a total of seven towers around the island had faced minor technical faults: “We carry out several daily tests of all the tsunami warning towers. We found seven that had minor technical faults and sent a team to rectify the issues.” The Tsunami warning towers at Arfeth Muslim Vidyalaya Modara, Lunawa Hospital Moratuwa, Colombo Main Mosque Kochchikade, Kattankudi, Valaichchenai, Kalkuda, Batticaloa, Allampili South School Ground, and R.C. Ladies College Delft were the seven towers that were affected. The repairs were being done at the time of writing and Kodippili informed that the issues would be fixed within a matter of hours. Furthermore, Kodippli assured that the seven towers were spread across the island and did not work independently but through a complete network so there was no issue of failure to warn of an incident.
