Three suspects including a tuition teacher and a police constable have been arrested over a weapon stolen from the Aarapathana Police several years ago, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
He said the STF personnel arrested the first suspect along with a pistol and a locally made weapon on Friday at Karannagoda in Meetiyagoda.
The suspect had been handed over to the Meetiyagoda Police. Upon interrogation, he had revealed that he received the automatic pistol from a tuition teacher residing in Gonapinuwala, Hikkaduwa.
“Accordingly, the tuition teacher was arrested yesterday. He has revealed that he bought the automatic pistol from a police constable attached to the Wellawatte Police who was arrested last night. The constable has been serving in the Agarapathana Police two years ago from where he had stolen the pistol,” the DIG said.
He said the detained suspects would be produced before the Balapitiya Magistrate today. “Steps have been taken to interdict the constable,” he said.
