China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd. (CSCEC) was awarded the contract to construct a tunnel as part of the 95.86 km North Central Province Canal Project.
The company will construct a 27.7 km long tunnel from Koduruwawa to Namalpura via the conserved forests and sanctuaries in Girithale and Hurulu, as part of the Mahaweli Water Security Investment Programme, which is implemented utilising the funds of Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The Cabinet of Ministers said CSCEC was selected from among the international competitive bids invited to select a suitable contractor.
The Cabinet approved a proposal presented by the Minister of Irrigation to award the construction contract to the Chinese company after it was recommended by the Standing Committee on Procurement.
