02 Feb 2022

The organisers of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has trimmed 1,214 players from its 2022 auction to just 590 yesterday (1), which is considered the biggest auction pool ever in the history of the IPL. Amongst those 590 are 23 Sri Lankans. Amongst players from other countries are 47 Australians, 34 West Indians, 33 South Africans, 24 Englishmen, 17 Afghanis, and five Bangladeshis. There are three Namibian and two Scot players too. Among the 23 Lankans, the highest price has gone to world’s top Twenty20 International bowler Wanindu Hasaranga who was in last year’s second phase of the IPL replacing Australia’s Adam Zampa in the team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for a price of Rs. 13.3 million. But his 2022 price has soared to Rs. 27 million. The only other Sri Lanka in the previous IPL, Dushmantha Chameera, also played for RCB in the IPL 2021 phase-two replacing Aussie Daniel Sams for a price of Rs. 13.3 million. He has been placed this time in the Rs. 13.5 million price category.   The 590 players will go under the hammer on 13 and 14 February in Bengaluru.
