Two men have been arrested in the Slave Island area for trying to extort money from a woman.
The suspects were arrested by the Colombo Children and Women's Bureau yesterday (27), police spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said.
They have been arrested for trying to extort Rs. 700,000 from a 33 year old woman residing in Wellawatte.
Police say the woman has been in a relationship with a man living in England for almost two years now through WhatsApp.
The man had demanded a ransom of Rs. 1.7 million after he became angry with the woman, the police spokesman said.
The man had demanded ransom, saying that various photos taken during the affair with the woman would be released on the internet.
The woman had agreed to pay Rs. 700,000 in cash and the police had arrested two Sri Lankans yesterday for sending the money.
Investigations have revealed that the man is a resident of Jaffna in Sri Lanka and has never met the woman.
The suspects are due to be produced before court today (28).
