Two RWs ‘enthusiastic’ about SJB alliance, says Harin

09 Feb 2021

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Harin Fernando yesterday (8) said that discussions between the party and the United National Party (UNP) are already underway in order to create a broad alliance to work towards common goals, and the UNP hierarchy is “enthusiastic” about this alliance. “This is similar to what we are doing with the Grand Opposition Alliance, where all Opposition parties will unite towards common goals. I have already talked with UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene on this matter, and they have been extremely supportive and enthusiastic,” he told The Morning yesterday. He further said that while the SJB and the UNP will function as two parties, this alliance will help them achieve goals for the betterment of the country that the SJB would not be able to achieve on its own. “While we function as two parties, we will create a common platform with the same ideologies to address issues in the country,” Fernando said. Meanwhile, UNP Deputy Leader Wijewardene said, however, that it is too early to determine whether the parties will function separately or whether there will be a merger. “We have aligned our common goals with the SJB and our party leaders have held discussions. We have given very positive feedback to their proposals, and we are ironing out the issues we have with regard to whether we will function as a single platform or not,” Wijewardene told The Morning. Speaking further, he said: “Currently, there are too many players trying to buy in on the alliance and we do not know who will eventually lead it.” However, it is important to note that neither party is interested in personal agendas, rather the betterment of the country, he claimed.
