The government has decided to immediately takeover and develop the Muthurajawela Sanctuary under the Ministry of Environment and the Urban Development Authority (UDA), Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said today.
He said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed the Minister of Environment to takeover the sanctuary immediately.
Addressing a media briefing at the Ministry today, the minister said the Muthurajawela Sanctuary had been destroyed due to several actions taken by various individuals.
The Minister said that he and Dr. Anil Jasinghe, the Secretary to the Ministry, had made an observation tour to look into this matter and had seen that not only certain businessmen, underworld gangs but also some government officials had contributed to this destruction.
On the instructions of the President, steps will be taken to takeover the ecosystem immediately and to develop it as an attractive ecosystem for local and foreign tourists.
