11 Mar 2020

Former Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga has been further remanded until 18 March. The order was delivered when the case was taken up before the Fort Magistrate’s Court today. Weeratunga is facing charges of money laundering and misappropriation over his alleged involvement in the 2006 purchase of four MiG 27 aircraft for the Sri Lanka Air Force. Earlier, the Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake had ordered for the court registrar to send an order to the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandana Wickramaratne  to take necessary measures to re-assign the two police officers who had previously Weeratunga’s case. Chief Police Inspector Nihal Francis and SSP Pavithra Dayaratne were hence ordered to be re-assigned, as it was they who conducted investigations into the matter for over 5 years.
