Udayanga seeks public assistance to revive tourism industry, says satisfied with his contribution

04 Jan 2021

Former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga today requested public assistance to revive the tourism economy and said that he is satisfied with his contribution made by bringing in Ukrainian tourists. Responding to criticisms over his involvement in bringing down Ukrainian tourists, he said he arranged a number of flights to bring down 394 Ukrainian tourists to Sri Lanka on the 28th and 29th of December. “They are currently staying in groups at several hotels in the country,” he stated. He stated that it was important to uplift the tourism industry in the country since it was gravely affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “What I have started now has funded several businesses, which will expand with the arrival of more tourists. The public has criticized our efforts to revive the tourism industry but they do not realize the impact it has on our economy. Therefore, I urge all citizens of Sri Lanka to assist us in developing this industry further,” he said.
