Under 24 15-a-side tourno returns after a decade

By Ranjika Perera Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR), together with Nippon Paint, successfully kicked off the Under 24 15-a-side league tournament yesterday (5).  The tournament is a platform for youth players in all major provinces who have graduated from school since 2019, providing an opportunity for players who have been unable to showcase their talents in rugby during the last three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other socioeconomic issues which have brought the country to standstill.  This tournament is taking place for the first time in Sri Lanka with the participation of youth rugby clubs and provincial youth rugby teams in one tournament. The Under 24 tournament is returning to the rugby calendar after a decade-long absence.  The tournament, which kicked off yesterday (5), will continue till 4 December and the final rounds will be played in the respective provinces.  The teams taking part this year are the Central, Uva, North Western, North Central, Southern, and Western Province youth teams. The youth clubs are Peterson, Field Force, Old Wesleyite Sports Club (OWSC), and Science Maroons.  All games will be officiated by a member of the Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees in the respective provinces. The weekend matches will take place as follows: 6 November – OWSC vs. Science Maroon at Thurstan Grounds at 4 p.m. 6 November – Uva vs. Western Province at Vincent Dias Ground, Badulla at 4 p.m. 6 November – NWP vs. Central at Maliyadeva Grounds, Kurunegala at 4 p.m. Peterson SC vs. Field Force RFC In the opening game of the tournament, Peterson SC beat Field Force RFC by 35 points to 10 at the Thurstan College grounds yesterday.
