The Medical Faculty at the University of Sabaragamuwa will increase its next intake of students to 100 for the next academic year, for which enrolment is to commence next month.

“As the world progresses, it is important that specialist healthcare services be established in Sri Lanka. There is a larger number of hospitals in Sri Lanka which are still at the rural hospital level; these hospitals need to be upgraded to base hospitals, and base hospitals to general hospitals. To facilitate the upgrade of our hospitals, we will need more specialist doctors,” Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi explained.
Seven new disciplines – pathology, parasitology, microbiology, forensic medicine, pharmacology, family medicine, and community medicine – will be established in a supplementary clinic building which will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 1,014 million with the objective of expanding and improving the facilities of the Medical Faculty at the Sabaragamuwa University. The building complex, which will be constructed under the first phase, is scheduled to be completed in a short period of one-and-a-half years.
"I believe that the Sabaragamuwa University will be able to meet the shortage of doctors, including specialists, with the development of specialist departments," Wanniarachchi elaborated.
The eight faculty-strong University of Sabaragamuwa at present houses up to 4,500 students. It was in 2019 that the Medical Faculty was established after the university enrolled 70 undergraduates; in November this year, that number will increase to 100 as new students are to be enrolled for the upcoming batch.
In the next few years, a professorial and clinical unit, a well-equipped library, staff accommodation, and many more facilities will be upgraded. The Saudi Fund for Development has pledged to provide $ 50 million for this purpose.
The Medical Faculty is being built in line with the green concept and has an eco-friendly waste management system.
