23 Jul 2019

By Tharumalie Silva United National Party (UNP) backbenchers are to collect signatures to impeach President Maithripala Sirisena. MP Chaminda Wijesiri told The Sunday Morning that a collective decision made by the UNP backbenchers to put forth an impeachment motion against President Maithripala Sirisena is being carried forward with the backbenchers looking to collect 75 signatures needed for the motion. “We are starting to collect the signatures necessary to present the motion in Parliament. We have received neither objections nor opposition by the leaders of the UNP to hinder us in our objectives and we view this as a positive sign. Therefore, we will carry on with our objectives,” he said. However, UNP seniors have not commented on their support towards the motion.
