UNP condemns offering travel bubble package to Indian workers

02 May 2021

The United National Party today expressed concerns on the Government's decision to offer the travel bubble system for Indian workers arriving to Sri Lanka. The UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara today said that it was extremely dangerous with the current strain of Covid spreading in the country. He explained that during the Avurudu season, the government took no responsible measures to control the spread of Covid and that the country is suffering for it. "We saw that there were many crowds at shopping complexes and markets, while many people were going on trips in Nuwara Eliya. None of them were wearing masks nor were they respecting social distancing. The government also took no steps to control this spread," he said. He revealed that the government is in talks to bring down Indian workers to Sri Lanka under the travel bubble system. "There’s growing concern about continued arrivals in Sri Lanka from pandemic-stricken India, particularly of workers availing themselves of 14-day “quarantine packages” sold by some travel agents," he revealed that the Sunday Times reported today.
