UNP group urges Sajith be appointed Party Leader
A group of UNPers today urged that Sajith Premadasa be appointed UNP Party Leader.
These views were expressed during a press briefing held in Colombo today.
Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara said a decision had not yet been taken on the leadership of the Party, even though UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had announced that Ranil Wikramasinghe would continue to be the Leader of the UNP.
Bandara added that the majority of the party wanted Premadasa to be appointed as UNP Leader.
“We ask the party to call the Working Committee and take a vote in regard to the party leadership,” Bandara said.
The group said they were very well aware of the reasons and forces behind Premadasa’s failure at the presidential elections. They said one reason was because Premadasa was made presidential candidate at the eleventh hour.
Parliamentarian Thalatha Atukorale added that there was no requirement for a new committee to consider party leadership and reform issues.
Atukorale who was appointed a member of the above committee said she had delivered her stance on who should be appointed party leader and would not participate in any meeting of the committee.
Premadasa was recently nominated by the UNP as the new Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
