UNP intensifies war on SJB members

03 Jun 2020

The United National Party (UNP) has sought a court order to suspend office bearers of the UNP affiliated Lanka Jathika Estate Workers Union (LJEWU) who are also members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB). UNP national organizer Naveen Dissanayake speaking to The Morning said the UNP had already obtained an interim order from the District Court of Colombo suspending LJEWU Secretary Vadivel Suresh from using funds from Unions's bank account. He said the order also suspends Suresh from selling LJEWU vehicles allocated to him. Dissanayake said the District Court will take up UNP's request to suspend the office bearers of the LJEWU including its President Harin Fernando who is also an SJB member . However, LJEWU Secretary Vadivel  Suresh speaking to The Morning said such an order could not be issued as the LJEWU had a separate constitution and separate Working Committee (WC) of its own and had no legal binding to the UNP . Suresh said the UNP may have taken such action as he and Fernando had joined the SJB to contest the general elections.
