UNP to suspend those violating its constitution

27 May 2020

The United National Party (UNP) has warned that it will take action against members who have sought the membership of other parties to contest the general election.

UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam in a press statement today said a few members of the party had joined other parties and have submitted nominations to contest the polls. Kariyawasam said according to the party constitution members have to seek the approval of the Working Committee (WC) in order to sign nominations through another party. He said the party leadership will take action against non-compliant members under article 3(h) of the UNP constitution. Kariyawasam said the UNP has written to such members requesting explanations on their conduct. He said the next WC meeting will take up the explanations provided by members in question and will decide on due the course of action.
