Upcountry railway line train operations commence

21 Nov 2021

By Buddhika Samaraweera Train operations on the upcountry railway line, which were suspended due to damages caused to the railway by the inclement weather, resumed yesterday (21). Due to heavy rains on 8 November, a landslide had occurred between the Rambukkana and Kadigamuwa railway stations on the upcountry railway line and train services were therefore restricted to Colombo Fort to Rambukkana railway station and vice versa. Accordingly, Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Union (SLRSMU) General Secretary Kasun Chamara said that the train service from Colombo Fort to Kandy railway station had resumed from yesterday. He said that only three trains were in operation on the said railway line yesterday, but that the usual number of trains will be in operation from today (22). Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport has initiated a project to develop the existing single track railway line from Kandy to Sarasavi Uyana as a double track one. According to the Transport Ministry, the distance between Kandy and Sarasavi Uyana railway stations is about 5 km and a total of 64 trains run daily. The development project was launched last Saturday (20) under the patronage of Transport Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi. “The project will be completed in two phases. The first phase will be to build the railway track between Kandy to Getambe while the rest from Getambe to Sarasavi Uyana will be completed under the second phase. The project, which would cost Rs. 589 million, is to be completed within two years,” according to the Government Information Department.
