Upcountry train services disrupted by bad weather

02 Nov 2021

  • C’mbo Fort-Badulla long-distance train operation postponed
BY Buddhika Samaraweera Due to inclement weather conditions, train services on the upcountry railway line have been disrupted, and the long-distance train services between Colombo Fort and Badulla that were scheduled to commence from today (3) will not be operated until further notice, according to the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Union (SLRSMU). SLRSMU General Secretary Kasun Chamara said that, although long-distance services from Colombo Fort to Badulla were scheduled to commence from today after about six months, those services had to be suspended due to a section of a railway bridge between the Gampola and Ulapane Railway Stations being damaged due to an earth slip. He said the repair work of the bridge has already commenced and that it will be possible to commence train services between Colombo and Badulla as soon as the repair work is completed. Chamara also said that due to the heavy rains prevailing in the Central Province these days, many landslides have occurred near the railways and that the relevant sections of the Department of Railways are working on clearing such. Meanwhile, a committee has been appointed to investigate the collision of two trains between the Ragama and Peralanda Railway Stations on 1 November, Department of Railways General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara said. All trains on the main railway line were delayed due to a signal malfunctioning on 1 November and it was later revealed that the signal failure was caused by a set of signal cables near the Kelaniya Railway Station having been cut by some individuals.
