Paraguay teens too much for Lanka

14 Jan 2020

Sri Lanka men’s national tennis teams went down 2-0 in the best-of-five-match tie against Paraguay on the opening day Friday (6) of their Davis Cup World Group-II Play-offs 1st Round on outdoor clay surface at Club Internacional de Tenis at Asuncion, Paraguay. The three remaining matches (rubbers) were to be held from 8.30 pm Sri Lanka time yesterday, Saturday. The two who beat the Lankan singles players on Friday were both 15 years of age. Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, who carried an ITF junior world rank of 131 on 10 February 2020, beat Sharmal Dissanayake, 23, while Martin Antonio Del Puerto who was junior world rank 693 as on 6 January beat Yasitha De Silva, who is 24 years of age. None of the Sri Lanka needed to win all three reaming rubbers –two reverse-singles and the doubles—if they were to win the tie and proceed further in World group-II. Yet the Paraguay doubles pair too, Juan Borba and Ayed Zatar, have had influential junior careers and clay court expertise to make life extremely difficult for the Lankans. This will be Sri Lanka’s first-ever Davis Cup World Group appearance and their first meeting with Paraguay in this over-a century-old tournament. Results Day-1 Adolfo Daniel Vallejo beat Sharmal Dissanayake 6-4, 6-4 (in 1h 26mins) Martin Antonio Vergara Del Puerto beat Yasitha De Silva 7-5, 6-3 (in 1h 25mins) Day-2 Juan Borba & Ayed Zatar vs. Yasitha De Silva & Sharmal Dissanayake * * On Sunday SL lost the doubles and lost the tie 4-0
