  • ‘First step towards economic healing’: Visiting US Under Secy. of State for Political Affairs
US State Department Under Secretary for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland commended the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) yesterday (23) for reaching out to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as a first step towards “healing the economy” in Sri Lanka. “What is crucial is the courageous step taken by the GoSL to reach out to the IMF for debt overpaying and fiscal and monetary needs. The US will be your partner as you roll up the sleeves and do the hard work of strengthening and healing the economy,” said Nuland while speaking at a press briefing held yesterday at the Foreign Affairs Ministry. She said that the economic relationship between the two countries is vital. “It is already strong, particularly as trade between the two countries grew during the Covid-19 period when Sri Lanka used its strong base in the apparel sector to supply the world with protective equipment.” Furthermore, she said that more work needs to be done between the two countries in the information technology (IT) and green energy sectors. The ministry jointly held a media briefing with Nuland yesterday, following the fourth Sri Lanka-US Partnership Dialogue in Colombo. “We are very pleased to renew our annual dialogue in person, after the long Covid-19 years,” said Nuland. Nuland visited Sri Lanka yesterday along with US State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Assistant Secretary Donald Lu. In a joint statement released by the Governments of Sri Lanka and the US, the US said it welcomed action taken by Sri Lanka to promote reconciliation and human rights in pursuit of development and prosperity. “Sri Lanka outlined its progress in reconciliation, in promoting and protecting human rights, and in strengthening democracy, democratic institutions, and practices, good governance, justice, and the rule of law. The US acknowledged progress in these areas, including efforts to reform the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), the release of long-term PTA detainees, the justice reform agenda, and engagement with civil society representatives. The US encouraged Sri Lanka to continue making progress on its commitments to reconciliation and human rights,” the statement read.
