Vaccinating 16-19-yr-olds to commence

By Buddhika Samaraweera The programme to administer the Covid-19 vaccine to schoolchildren between the ages of 16 and 18 years, as well as to 19-year-olds, is to commence today (22) in all parts of the country, according to the Health Services Director General (DGHS) Dr. Asela Gunawardena. Speaking to the media, he said that the US-German-made Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine would be given to these students and that the relevant stocks of vaccines have already been sent to the offices of the Provincial, District, and Regional Directors of Health Services in the relevant areas. “Officials, including Provincial, District and Regional Health Services Directors, have been instructed to provide Covid-19 vaccines to students in all age groups of 16, 17, 18 and 19 years. The decision as to which age group should be given the vaccines first should be made by the relevant principals and the District and Regional Health Services Directors,” he added. The Covid-19 vaccination programme for the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level (A/L) students between the ages of 18 and 19 years commenced on 15 October in the Colombo District under the Covid-19 vaccination programme for schoolchildren.
