Vasudeva theorizes reason behind Basil's resignation

13 Jun 2022

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) was on the verge of a breakup with the 21st amendment being brought up in parliament and if former MP Basil Rajapaksa remained in parliament he would be asked to leave and with a break up within the party, the majority in parliament would be lost, says SLPP MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara. He made this statement during a media brief today (13). "With the disagreements within the party and with the high chance of a split within the party, Basil Rajapaksa knew that resigning would be the best first option. Being a member of the family related to the President, the talks of a family rule would die down. Basil's intention was to keep the party together, avoid a break up and remain in majority in parliament. With the majority in parliament, the Government can do as they please in parliament. This was his main intention," said Nanayakkara.
