Veddah village sees Covid-19 outbreak

By Pamodi Waravita 44 members of the Dambana Adivasi village, situated close to the Mahiyanganaya town in the Badulla District, have contracted the Covid-19 virus, according to the Veddah Nayake’s Chief Spokesman Uruvarige Wimalaratna Attho.  Speaking to The Morning yesterday (29), Wimalaratna Attho confirmed that these 44 members of the Dambana Adivasi village include the Veddah Chief Uruwarige Wannila Aththo’s wife. While the Chief’s wife has been admitted to hospital as she also has certain other ailments, the rest of the tribe is currently undergoing treatment at their respective homes. According to Wimalaratna Attho, the village is populated with about 4,000 Adivasi members, and those over the age of 60 years have received both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine. “Those who have tested positive are mostly below the age of 60 years. The Chief’s wife is one of the few who are over the age of 60 years. Those between the ages of 30 and 60 years have mostly received one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine,” he added. The WHO has stated that the Delta (B.1.617.2) variant of the Covid-19 virus is at least two times as transmissible as the original virus. Sri Lanka is currently facing a severe spread of the Delta variant in all districts. The Health Promotion Bureau (HPB) said that 4,596 new cases and 212 new deaths were reported on 28 August due to the virus.
