21 Apr 2021

State Minister of Solar Power, Wind and Hydro Power Generation Duminda Dissanayake today (21) stated the vessel containing radioactive substances which was temporarily docked in Hambantota has left the Port. He stated that the local agent for the corporation Wilhelmsen Meridian Navigation Ltd., to which the vessel BBC Naples belongs, had mistakenly informed the Hambantota Harbour Master that no radioactive substances were present onboard the vessel. However, once the Harbour Master had found the substances in the vessel, he had informed the Sri Lanka Atomic Regulatory Authority immediately, following which a formal eviction order was given to the owners. It was revealed that the radioactive substance being transported by the vessel was Uranium Hexafluoride, which is used to process uranium.
