Alpine’s Esteban Ocon took a maiden Formula-1 victory in an extraordinary and madcap Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday (1).

Lewis Hamilton regained the World Championship lead for the first time since May after fighting back to finish third having been last five laps into the race.

His title rival Max Verstappen was a victim of an incident-strewn wet start but managed to salvage a point for tenth place in a badly damaged Red Bull.

A race featuring an opening first few laps among the most remarkable in F-1 history left Hamilton with a six-point lead over Verstappen as the sport goes into its three-week summer break.

Hamilton finished a close third behind Ocon and Sebastian Vettel’s Aston Martin, but the German was later disqualified for a fuel irregularity. He was left in second in the final results, pending an appeal by his team against the verdict.

A pile-up at the first corner on a slippery track left Hamilton briefly leading Ocon and Vettel on the first lap before the race was red-flagged to clear up the mess strewn over the track.

Extraordinarily, when the race restarted, Hamilton was the only car on the grid for a second start as every other driver made pit stops for dry-weather slick tyres because the sun had come out and the track was almost dry.

Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel has lost his second-place finish and has been disqualified from the results of the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday after race officials were unable to take the required fuel sample from his car following the race.

The Formula1 said yesterday (2) that under the technical regulations, competitors must ensure that a 1.0 litre sample of fuel may be taken from the car at any time during the event. However it was only possible to take 0.3 litres from Vettel’s Aston Martin after Sunday’s race.

Running less fuel can give a performance advantage as each 1 kg of fuel equates to an average of about 0.035 seconds a lap, wrote BBC.

The decision means that Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton inherits second place, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz classified as the final podium finisher in third.

Aston Martin to appeal

Aston Martin have announced their intention to appeal, adding on Twitter: “The 18 points loss is disappointing for the team, but it doesn’t take away from an otherwise flawless drive from Sebastian. Today (Sunday) we showed that our car has strong race pace. Onwards and upwards.”

The rest of the top 10 behind Vettel also inherit a place each, with Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Raikkonen promoted from P11 into the final points paying position of P10.

The result also means Hamilton extends his title lead over Max Verstappen by a further two points after picking up 18 points to Verstappen’s two.

From stewards’ verdict

“The Stewards heard from the team representative. After the race it was not possible to take a 1.0 litre sample of fuel from car-five. The team was given several opportunities to attempt to remove the required amount of fuel from the tank, however it was only possible to pump 0.3 litres out.

“During the hearing in presence of the FIA Technical Delegate and the FIA Technical Director the team principal of Aston Martin stated that there must be 1,44 litres left in the tank, but they are not able to get it out. This figure is calculated using the FFM or injector model.

“Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisions of the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Article 10.1.1 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the applicable time limits.”
