In what was a thrilling two-day event under typical sluggish Kandy weather, Vidyartha College and D.S. Senanayake (DSS) College drew 10-10 in the Cup Final to become joint champions of the Dialog Schools U19 Division I Rugby Sevens 2022 at Pallekele yesterday.
Vidyartha College made their way into the finals beating Nalanda College (47-0) and Lumbini College (36-0) in the group stage. They were up against Wesley, whom they beat 20-5 in the Cup/Plate quarterfinals. In the Cup semifinals, Vidyartha College stunned the double champions Isipathana College by 12-10.
D.S. Senanayake College was the surprise package of the tournament. In the group stage, The Dons beat Devapathiraja College (37-0) and St. Anthony’s College, Kandy (19-7). They went on to beat Royal College 17-12 in the Cup/Plate quarterfinals, and then beat St Joseph’s College 26-14 in the Cup semifinals.
St. Peter’s secure Plate Championship
St. Peter’s College secured the Plate Championship, beating Wesley College in the Plate finals by 24 points to 0.
Peterites won both their group games, beating Rahula College by 40-0 and Maliyadeva College by 41-0. After getting beaten 14-0 by arch rivals St. Joseph’s College, the Peterites went on to beat Royal College 26-0 in the Plate semifinals.
Wesley College beat Carey College (43-0) and St. Aloysius College (33-5) in the group stage. They were beaten by Vidyartha in the Cup/Plate quarterfinals, but went on to beat Dharmaraja College 7-5 in the Plate semifinals.
St. Anthony’s College managed to secure the Bowl Championship after beating St. Aloysius College by 27 points to 0 in the Bowl finals.
