While curfew regulations and travel restrictions are gradually being relaxed, the Police are on high alert over ensuring the general public follows the health guidelines.
A total of 1,064 persons had been arrested for violating quarantine regulations from 26 May to 2 June, the Police Media Unit (PMU) revealed. These arrests had been made after several warnings were issued to persons to wear face masks and maintain physical distancing when in public places.
The checkpoints that were in place during the lockdown are still operational and every vehicle and person is verified before they enter a main city. Temperature readings are taken at railway stations and at main bus stops before commuters board the train or bus, respectively.
“We have given the authority to the Police to take necessary action against whoever violates the quarantine regulations and health guidelines that have been issued for various sectors. We also urge that the general public take some initiative and responsibility in following the guidelines that were issued to safeguard their health and wellbeing as Covid-19 is very much a threat to society,” Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe noted.
The Ministry of Health had also noted that the wearing of face masks is not essential if a person is travelling in their own vehicle. However, once they step out of the vehicle to enter a public place, they should wear the face mask and maintain adequate physical distance.
