The Excise Department of Sri Lanka had arrested over 5,500 people pertaining to various violations, including illicit alcohol and drugs, during the Covid-19 lockdown period.
A total of 5,844 individuals between 16 March and 31 May were arrested on charges concerning illegal alcohol and drugs. 5,242 cases were related to illegal alcohol.
This included 2,664 instances of possessing, transporting, or selling illicit liquor; 1175 cases of possessing, transporting, or selling illegal toddy; and 682 cases of illegal breweries.
In addition, 400 cases relating to illegal drugs were detected during the same period.
This number consisted of 254 cases of possessing, transporting, and/or selling marijuana and 129 instances of the same in terms of heroin.
