A reimagining of the classic waffle, Sticks & Co. founded by Thahera Zarook is the newest player on the block with a fresh new take on an iconic dessert. Bringing what is a relatively common street food item in Sri Lanka, Sticks & Co. offers waffles on a stick – to have your waffle on the go, or maybe just conveniently enjoy what would otherwise be a pretty messy dessert item.

An Advanced Level student, just 18 years old, Thahera is an incredible young entrepreneur who was inspired to start her own business after having taken on the role of marketing for her aunt’s home business. She shared that, having helped out her aunt with all the different aspects of running her own cloud kitchen, she soon realised she too can start her own venture.
Starting your own business does not come without its unique set of challenges. Regardless of whatever age you are or level of experience you have, it is not an easy task. In particular, starting a business during a pandemic poses its own set of roadblocks, and Thahera stated that thanks to having helped out her aunt, she felt as though she wasn’t going in it totally blind. However, things didn’t always go according to plan, and with the most recent lockdown and various import restrictions, she has been facing some difficulties in sourcing some of her ingredients.
“Many of the ingredients I use are imported, and with the prices increasing, it became a challenge for me because I do not want to raise the price point of my product,” she said, adding that there is always a concern of not being able to source ingredient at all due to scarcity of these imported items.
Sticks & Co. offers a number of flavour combinations as toppings on their premium waffle sticks, including Nutella and Oreo, Nutella and Biscoff, plain white chocolate, Nutella with nuts, and Nutella and white chocolate. Thahera shared that her bestsellers happen to be her Nutella with white chocolate and Nutella with Oreo toppings, and so that is what we tried.

We have to say that the product really subverted our expectations. Ordinarily, one would assume that a waffle would be somewhat soft and just lightly crunchy on the outside. However, considering that it is attached to a stick, and in order for it to hold its shape, these waffles, while being soft, are also very crunchy – crunchier than you expect, which was a very pleasant surprise.
Despite having sat in a generous lathering of Nutella, white chocolate, and Oreo for some time, the waffle really held it together and was absolutely delicious. The texture was very pleasant and the waffle itself is neutral enough that it really elevates its toppings and allows the added flavours to shine without overpowering them.
The product was such a delight, and is pretty ideal for a quick sweet treat as it is light enough that you won’t feel as though you’ve had a heavy meal afterwards. Considering how you are able to access a premium product for an extremely reasonable price, we absolutely recommend that you try out waffles on a stick from Sticks & Co.
