Compiled by K.D. Risin Randiv A few weeks ago, we went to the Royal College Mas Arena to witness the World Muay Thai Championship. Muay Thai – sometimes referred to as Thai boxing – is a combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. At this event, we spoke to a couple of fighters as well as the Kru (coach) and the Thai ambassador. Here are some experts from the interview. Q: What is Muay Thai? A: Muay Thai is Thai boxing. It is also the national sport in Thailand. Muay Thai is known as the “Art of Eight Limbs”. The father of Muay Thai is Nai Khanom Tom. Q: What is the importance of Muay Thai? A: Muay Thai is not only a combat sport; you can also do it as an exercise for the whole body. The uniqueness of Muay Thai is that the sport uses mostly the elbow and knee for striking. Q: How important is Muay Thai to Sri Lanka? A: At present, the people in Sri Lanka are burdened with many problems and various kinds of diseases. Such people can engage in Muay Thai because it can be a great sport for stress relief and for releasing the pain that comes from various kinds of diseases. Q: What is WBC Muay Thai? A: WBC Muay Thai is a non-profit organisation that regulates, sanctions, and supervises professional Muay Thai championships worldwide. WBC Muay Thai is active in over 75 countries at present. Q: Tell us about the WBC Muay Thai Championship Sri Lanka 2022. A: WBC Muay Thai Championship Sri Lanka was held on 12 March 2022 at the Royal Mas Arena Colombo 7. It was an amazing event that helped us to assess the professional level of Muay Thai in Sri Lanka.  Q: How did that event go? A: Of all the Muay Thai events and championships that have been held in Sri Lanka, WBC Muay Thai Championship Sri Lanka 2022 is the best. Sri Lankan Muay Thai fighters fought on that fantastic night representing more than 10 Muay Thai gyms in Sri Lanka. There were 24 Sri Lankan fighters fighting that night and the main event was the most entertaining fight. Q: Can you tell us more about the main event? A: The two fighters that were selected were Srimal Rodrigo and Adhal Kila and they fought in a very nice manner by showing respect to each other. That’s a good example of Muay Thai and a great way to get a real idea about Muay Thai. Q: Who is the country representative and the CEO of WBC Sri Lanka? A: Miran Nilangana is the country representative and the CEO of WBC Sri Lanka. He actually did a great job towards making this event successful. Q: Who helped to make this event a success? A: The sponsors helped a lot to make this event successful. Also a very special thanks to the judges and the referees who helped to make the fights clear, and the spectators who motivated the fighters. Q: Can you tell us about the fighters? A: There were 12 intense rounds and all went according to the original rules and regulations and it was fantastic. The most entertaining fight was the 12th one and that was between Srimal Rodrigo and Abdul Iqbal Mohamed Adhal. Also, it was the main event. Q: What is the vision of Muay Thai? A: The main vision of Muay Thai is to advance, promote, educate, and instruct the martial arts of Thailand throughout the world while offering the student, fighter, and instructor the highest standard of teaching Thai Boxing (Muay Thai). Q: How important is Muay Thai for children? A: Muay Thai teaches children critical moral lessons that will carry over into adulthood. Muay Thai isn’t just about winning; it’s about doing so with respect, honour, and integrity. One of the first things children will learn from Muay Thai is the value of respect. Q: How do people view Muay Thai and what do you have to say about that? A: Lots of people think about Muay Thai in a very suspicious manner. They think that Muay Thai is only about fighting but it’s not. Those who engage in Muay Thai know what Muay Thai is. Muay Thai has fights too but it is only for competition and self-defence. Muay Thai is a martial art that is filled with good qualities, respect, and honour. WBC Championship Sri Lanka 2022 is a good event through which you can understand the sport.   Risin Randiv is a student of Media Metric Amuthu Iskole writers’ club.
