Weather forecast : Rough seas and thundershowers

09 Nov 2020

The Department of Meteorology alerted that the showery conditions and rough seas will continue over the island throughout the day with showers or thundershowers expected to occur at several places in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Showers of about 100 mm are to be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern Provinces and in the Trincomalee District as well. Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western, and Uva Provinces and in the Galle and Matara Districts during the morning. The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damage caused by temporary, localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. The forecast for sea areas indicates that the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar, and Kankesanturai can be fairly rough at times. Temporarily strong gusty winds with speeds of up to 70-80 kmph and very rough seas are to be expected during thundershowers. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in other sea areas around the island as well during evening or night. Winds will be north-easterly in the sea areas around the island at a speed of 25-35 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 40-50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Colombo to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar, and Kankesanturai.
