Weerasekera responds to Panamure Police’s alleged murder of SJB supporter

17 Nov 2021

Responding to the Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB) claims in Parliament today (17) that one of their supporters was murdered by Police officers of the Panamure Police Station, Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekera explained that the suspect had committed suicide inside a holding cell at the Station and was not connected to the SJB protests held yesterday (16). "There have been accusations that the man who was arrested yesterday was a participant at the protests held by the SJB. This is not true. This person is a mentally unstable man, who has had many cases filed against him for domestic abuse after consuming alcohol," claimed Weerasekera.  He added that the individual who was arrested was Indika Jayaratne, aged 37 years, was a resident of Weligeyaya and was a drug and alcohol addict.  "The individual was arrested at 10.30pm, which was well after the protests, and at 3.30am a police officer found him hanging from his own t-shirt. The man had tried to commit suicide, but the police had managed to take him out of the noose. Unfortunately, while the police were transporting him to hospital, he had succumbed to his suicide attempt," Weerasekera clarified.  Weerasekera also stated that a warrant was issued for the arrest of Jayaratne as his daughter was severely injured from a violent attack on her, and the police were advised to arrest Jayaratne if seen. The police entry was lodged on the 12th of November as Jayaratne had attacked his daughter with a pole and she was hospitalised with injuries. This comes after SJB MPs were seen protesting about the incident in Parliament today by holding up placards and shouting allegations that the Panamure Police had murdered one of their supporters. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Police stated today that two policemen of the Panamure police station were interdicted following a tense situation with civilians yesterday. Three police teams have been deployed to inquire into the incident.
