Weightlifter Dissanayake fails, Lankans’ woes in Asiad continue

23 Aug 2018

One of the biggest medal prospects of Sri Lanka at the ongoing Asian Games in Indonesia, Chathuranga Dissanayake, who competed in the Men’s 69kgs weightlifting, was disqualified after failing in all his three attempts in the clean and jerk category. Dissanayake, 29, who went to the world stage from his village Hataraliyadda in the Central Province, won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia early this year. He also reached his highest career world-ranking of 11 last June for the 69kgs category, which was incidentally the highest career rating achieved by a Sri Lankan weightlifter. Kang Chol of North Korea won the Gold medal in that event while the Silver and the Bronze went to lifters from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan respectively. Earlier, Sri Lanka Men’s 4x100m freestyle swimming team finished sixth in their heats but were subsequently disqualified due to an illegitimate start by one of their team members. The above photo shows Dissanayake with the Silver medal he won in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April this year.
