After the second day, Harshana Thilakarathne is in clear lead in boys’ Under-18 segment with 5½ out of six while Dahamdi Sanudula and Oshini D. Gunawardena too are having five points out of six games to follow the leaders closely at the Western Asian Online Youth Chess Championships, conducted by the Asian Chess Federation in amalgamation with the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka from 18 to 20 September (yesterday).

A total of 850 players were participating in this biggest online chess event in Asia, taking place on the Tornelo platform. The time control is 15 minutes + 10 seconds for each move played.

The winners of each age group will be selected to play the FIDE World Youth and Cadet Chess Grand Prix 2021, to be conducted by the International Chess Federation.

19 September, 2021: The Western Asian Online Chess Championships began on Saturday (18) with the participation of more than 850 players from 15 countries, on the Tornelo Platform.

Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Nepal, Oman, Palestine, Syria, UAE, Uzbekistan, and Sri Lanka are in the race for the championship.

India has fielded the highest number of players, 380, whilst Sri Lanka is fielding 200, and Iran 161, with others completing the rest.

Ending on Sunday

Indian players will be dominating the event with a great resistance coming from Iran and the countries of the Russian bloc. Sri Lanka’s International Master (IM) Harshana Thilakarathne is playing in the Under-18 Open category.

The event, conducted by the Asian Chess Federation (ACF), is organised by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL).

It will be in progress on 19 and 20 September, Sunday and Monday. The open and girls categories are divided into two groups. The girls’ category starts at 11.30 a.m. Sri Lanka time while the open segment starts at 4.30 p.m. each day. The time control is ‘Rapid Chess Time Control’ of 15 minutes plus 10 seconds for each and every move played.

Namal Rajapaksa joins opening ceremony

A brief and simple opening ceremony was held at 11 a.m. Sri Lanka time on Saturday with Hisham Ali Mohamed Taher, Secretary General of ACF, being the chief guest.

Namal Rajapaksa, Minister of Youth and Sports, had sent a recorded message to encourage the participants.

Taher was delighted with the number of participants this time for the championship and praised the organisers for hard work and he also noted that the Asian Chess Federation is conducting a lot of events with the idea of strengthening Asia’s chess. He wished all participants success.

Champions qualify for FIDE Youth & Cadet GP

Sports Minister Rajapaksa stated that, with the strategic structure in the game of chess, it can be used to develop our own life. He also said that he believed the event could be regarded a truly world-class competition.

CFSL’s Head Luxman Wijesuriya, speaking at the event, said that his body is doing a lot of programmes to uplift Sri Lanka’s chess. But, it is also ready to support upgrading both Asian and world chess too.

The champions of each age group of the Western Asian Online Chess Championships will be selected to play in the World FIDE Youth and Cadet Chess Grand Prix 2021, which is considered the most prestigious age-group event, to be held for the first time in due course.
